Where are you located?
Chateau Thuries is located in the sunny South of France, just outside a town named Revel, which is between Toulouse and Carcassonne, both of which are amazing destinations for a day out. The amazing old walled city of Carcassonne is the second most popular tourist destination in France, after Paris. We are in the foothills of the Black Mountains and also close to the spectacular Pyrenees Mountains, so there are beautiful landscapes surrounding us. If you fancy a trip to Spain before or after your stay we are a 2 hour drive from the Spanish boarder. Equally there are fantastic beaches only one and a half hour’s drive away, as well as skiing in the Pyrenees - the best of both worlds! Do we need to hire a car for our visit?
Yes, the Chateau is located in a peaceful and rural location. To make the most of your stay, we recommend you have a car.
Where are the nearest airports?
Our nearest main airports are Toulouse or Carcassonne, both under an hour from the Chateau. There are several flights a day from all major London airports and other major cities to Toulouse with a variety of airlines. There is also an airport located thirty minutes away at Castres, which offers flights to Paris on a daily basis.
Can you get to the Chateau by public transport?
Not easily, although you can get a train to Castelnaudary (15 mins away) and we would be happy to pick you up from there.
How long do you recommend us to stay?
It depends on what your looking for during your stay, however to make the most of your holiday we recommend a minimum of 3-nights.
Do you serve food & drinks?
Breakfast is included in the room rate. There is an honesty bar for drinks - help yourselves and enjoy! We can provide lunch/dinner upon request, however booking is required in advance. We are happy to recommend local eateries (of which there are plenty!) for your stay.
Is there anywhere you recommend to visit during our stay?
The medieval city of Carcassonne is a MUST. Spend the day wandering the city, dining in fantastic eateries and browsing the shops. It really is beautiful.
There are lots of lovely small villages and towns, you could also spend a day at our nearby lake. We can even pack you a picnic or recommend restaurants!
What can we do and see during our stay?
Vineyards! There are an abundance of beautiful vineyards in the area. Some of which will offer lunches and wine tastings. A perfect French day out! We can also arrange for a tour operator to pick you up from the chateau for a full or half day tour - then you don’t need to worry about driving (booking in advance is essential).
Vide Greniers – during the summer months on Sunday mornings, there are some wonderful Vide Greniers (translates as ‘Empty Attics’) in the local villages where you can pick up lots of lovely vintage and antique bargains. Make sure you leave room in your luggage!
Toulouse – a wonderful city. Named La Ville Rose after its beautiful red brick architecture. There are shops, museums, boat tours and of course restaurants and bars.
Carcassonne – as said above, it is a must see!
Historical villages – we will be happy to recommend nearby towns and villages for you to visit. There are also many local festivities held regularly around and about the area.
Bike riding – borrow one of our bikes and cycle along the Canal du Midi, which is just at the bottom of the garden! You can cycle along this shaded pathway all the way into town or up to a nearby lake if you want to.
Mirepoix – the medieval village of Mirepoix with its quintessential historic square. There is a charming market on Mondays and also lovely restaurants. From Mirepoix, f you fancy a little car journey you can drive up into the foothills of the Pyrenees.
Markets – one of the best food markets in France is held in Revel on Saturday mornings. Taste escargot and frogs legs as well as an abundance of local cheeses, pastas, meats and ready to eat delicacies.
Events – if there is an event on locally during your stay, we will let you know - sometimes nearby towns hold fetes, music festivals and much more throughout the summer.
The Pyrenees – lovely views and walks.
Skiing and the beaches – only an hour and a half away!
The Black Mountains – the stunning black mountains just on our doorstep - some lovely drives and walks to be had.
Relax! Our terrace is there to be used. Sit out in the sun with some wine and your loved one. Enjoy the chateau, take a stroll around our parkland garden or sit in the Salon for some down time. If its chilly, we will light you a fire!
Do you hold events?
Yes – we’ve only just opened but we would love to hold events here - weddings, music events and cocktail evenings in the near future. There will also be a French language weekend (or week) course for beginners in October and also an art workshop in September - if you’re interested please get in touch. If there are any events you would be interested in, please do let us know - we’re always open to new ideas!
Do you allow children?
We think of Chateau Thuries as a romantic escape for couples. However, if you’re looking for a family holiday please get in touch and we can discuss the sleeping arrangements.
